Wings………..How to…..

Step 1:

First things first draw the shape of the wing you’d like your doll to have, transfer this to kitchen roll - now you have your pattern pieces.

Next you need to gather together all the things you’ll need:

Fabric, wire, wire cutters, pattern pieces, a candle (and something to light it with :0) ), scissors, pins and glue.

Got it all?? Now you’re ready to begin

Step 2:

Lay your pattern pieces on the fabric pin and cut them out, I tend to leave a scant ¼ inch on the top edge

Step3:

Using the pattern pieces as a guide shape and cut your wire, be sure to leave enough to be inserted in the rear of your doll:

     Step 4:

Now for the fun bit, you’re going to sear the lower edge of the wing in a candle flame. One word about this, make sure your fabric will allow you to do this, unfortunately this is trial and error. Oh I nearly forgot to mention - I leave a pin in the top edge of the wing fabric, this is just to remind me which is the top edge.

Do this with all of your wing pieces:

Step 5:

Ok now we’re ready to attach the wire….. Cover the wire in glue

Lay the wire on the top edge of the wing and fold that extra ¼ inch over the wire:

Do this with all of the wings.

On this one I left an extra bit of wire on the end and that was so as I could to a curly thing ( you don’t have to do this if you don’t want to)

Ok now you should have all the wings done:

Now if like me you find that the wire edge of the wing is too messy then you can add some ribbon or beads or whatever you fancy to ‘hide’ that messy edge, on these I decided to add a strip of ribbon:

Done deal J

Now you just need to drill holes in the back of your doll and insert:

These wings don't have to be used on a Barbie, they can also be used on cloth dolls too.
